Canary Islands

The Canary Islands, an autonomous Spanish archipelago off the northwest coast of Africa, produce some of Europe’s most distinctive and volcanic-influenced wines. With high elevations, intense sunlight, cooling trade winds, and mineral-rich soils from ancient lava flows, the islands offer extreme growing conditions that yield wines of striking freshness and character. Indigenous grape varieties such as Listán Blanco (Palomino), Listán Negro, and Malvasía thrive here, often grown on old, ungrafted vines due to the region’s immunity from phylloxera. Each island—particularly Tenerife, Lanzarote, and La Palma—has its own DO (Denominación de Origen) and unique viticultural practices, including the dramatic, hand-dug vine pits of Lanzarote. Wines from the Canary Islands are gaining international acclaim for their saline minerality, vibrant acidity, and expression of volcanic terroir.
