Durif is a deeply colored red grape created in nineteenth-century France from a crossing of Syrah and Peloursin, and it is better known in California as Petite Sirah. It produces powerful, full-bodied wines with blackberry, blueberry, pepper, firm tannins, and strong aging potential, and it should not be confused with Syrah despite the name.
