Merlot is a red grape variety of Bordeaux origin, valued for its supple texture, moderate tannin, and ability to produce both accessible wines and age-worthy blends. It is one of the principal grapes of Bordeaux’s Right Bank, especially in Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, where clay soils often support wines of depth, flesh, and structural balance.
The grape is widely planted internationally and commonly shows plum, black cherry, red currant, cocoa, cedar, herbs, and earthy notes depending on climate and ripeness. Merlot is important both as a varietal wine and as a blending partner with Cabernet Sauvignon, where it can add softness, mid-palate volume, and generosity.
