Montepulciano is a dark-skinned red grape grown mainly in central and southern Italy, especially Abruzzo, where it forms the basis of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. It typically produces deeply colored, medium- to full-bodied wines with black cherry, plum, herbs, moderate acidity, and soft to firm tannins, and it should not be confused with Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, a Tuscan wine made primarily from Sangiovese.
