Valtellina is an Alpine wine region in northern Lombardy, extending along the Adda River near the Swiss border. Vineyards occupy steep, south-facing terraces on the Rhaetian Alps, where elevation, sunlight, and large temperature shifts support slow, even ripening.
The principal grape is Nebbiolo, locally called Chiavennasca, used for Rosso di Valtellina, Valtellina Superiore, and the dried-grape wine Sforzato di Valtellina. The wines are typically pale in color, aromatic, and firmly structured, with red fruit, dried flowers, herbs, and pronounced acidity.
