The Vosges Mountains form a natural barrier west of Alsace, forcing moisture-laden Atlantic air to rise, cool, and release most of its rain on the mountains’ western slopes. The resulting rain shadow leaves Alsace unusually sunny and dry, reducing disease pressure and supporting slow, healthy ripening with concentrated aromas and preserved acidity.
