Brazil is Emerging
Brazilian wine represents a diverse and evolving wine industry in South America, with its modern development strongly influenced by Italian immigration during the late 19th century. Most production is concentrated in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, particularly Serra Gaúcha and Vale dos Vinhedos, where Chardonnay, Merlot, and traditional-method sparkling wines have earned increasing international recognition. Beyond these established regions, Campanha Gaúcha produces expressive red wines, while the tropical São Francisco Valley in northeastern Brazil demonstrates an unusual approach to viticulture, using irrigation and managed pruning to achieve multiple harvests annually. Although often overshadowed by neighboring Argentina and Chile, Brazil has developed a distinctive wine identity through its sparkling wine expertise, diverse growing environments, and expanding production of premium still wines.
