Important South African Geography
South Africa sits where the cold Benguela Current from the Atlantic meets the much warmer waters influenced by the Agulhas Current along the Indian Ocean side. The cold Atlantic water helps create cooling winds and maritime conditions around regions such as Stellenbosch, Constantia, Elgin, and the Cape South Coast, slowing grape ripening and helping preserve acidity. Warmer ocean influence farther east creates different temperature and moisture patterns, adding to the remarkable climatic diversity found across the Cape. These competing ocean systems are a major reason South Africa can produce everything from ripe, powerful wines to remarkably fresh, cool-climate Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Sauvignon Blanc.
