New Grapes Making Waves
Experimental varieties such as Marselan, Vidal, and newer hybrids are helping wine regions adapt to heat, humidity, disease pressure, and increasingly unpredictable growing seasons. Marselan, a crossing of Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache, offers color, structure, and drought tolerance, while Vidal is a cold-hardy hybrid best known for aromatic table wines and icewine. Many modern hybrids are bred to require fewer vineyard treatments while preserving acidity, flavor, and reliable yields in challenging climates. Their growing use suggests that the future of wine may depend not only on protecting traditional grapes, but also on expanding what growers are willing to plant.
