Douro Valley History
The Douro Valley is one of Portugal’s most important wine regions and the historic home of Port wine. Its steep, terraced vineyards rise above the Douro River, often on schist soils that force vines to root deeply in a hot, dry climate. Traditional grapes such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Cão, and Tinta Barroca are used for both fortified and increasingly serious dry red wines. The region is significant historically because it became one of the world’s earliest formally demarcated wine regions in the 18th century. Today, the Douro is respected not only for Port, but also for powerful, complex table wines that have helped redefine modern Portuguese wine.
