Wines of Brazil
Brazil is one of South America’s most intriguing emerging wine countries, with most fine-wine production concentrated in the cooler south. Regions such as Serra Gaúcha and Campanha Gaúcha benefit from elevation, latitude, and climatic conditions that are far better suited to wine grapes than Brazil’s tropical image might suggest. Sparkling wine has been a major strength, but producers are increasingly showing potential with still wines from grapes like Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, and varieties adapted to warmer conditions. Brazil’s biggest challenge is its generally humid climate, which can increase disease pressure and make vintage conditions unpredictable. Still, improving viticulture, better site selection, and continued investment suggest Brazil has significant room to develop its fine-wine identity.
