Wines of Morocco
Morocco has a long wine history dating back to Phoenician and Roman influence. Modern production expanded significantly during the French Protectorate, when European grape varieties became widely planted. Meknès and the Middle Atlas foothills are among the most important areas, benefiting from elevation and cooler nights. Common grapes include Syrah, Cinsault, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay. Morocco’s wine culture is especially interesting because it combines ancient Mediterranean roots, French influence, and a modern push toward higher-quality production.
