Pouilly Fumé and Sancerre
Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé are two of the Loire Valley’s most famous expressions of Sauvignon Blanc. Both are typically dry, high-acid wines with citrus, green fruit, herbal notes, and a strong mineral character. Sancerre often shows a lean, precise style with lemon, chalk, and subtle grassy notes. Pouilly-Fumé, grown just across the Loire River, can be slightly broader and is often associated with flinty, smoky aromas. Together, they show how Sauvignon Blanc can be far more restrained, savory, and terroir-driven than the intensely tropical styles found in many warmer regions.
